Are you 2 Smart 4 Drugs?

Between September and December last year, 5,000 pupils in Essex declared themselves officially 2 Smart 4 Drugs. Why? Because they took part in a series of all-singing, all-dancing roadshows in schools all over the county. By joining in, they increased their awareness of the dangers of drugs with the help of chart band Orange Orange and BBC TV doctor Dave Bull.

The 2 Smart 4 Drugs roadshow tour is a partnership project between Essex FM, Essex Police and the Essex Drug Action Team. It uses the razzmatazz of showbiz to attract the attention of pupils aged between 10 and 14 - and then delivers a strong anti-drugs message.

Launched in 1996, the first roadshow tour was highly commended by the Health Education Authority in its Tackling Drugs Together awards. An evaluation report by the University of Essex found that schools felt the event was memorable and backed up their own curriculum in a fun way.

The 1997 tour starred chart band Orange Orange - formerly Upside Down - and the Reebok City Jam Display Team.

The Chain Reaction Theatre Company performed a series of original and funny sketches highlighting issues surrounding drugs, and there were plenty of quizzes and competitions to keep everyone entertained and informed!
