A ground-breaking teaching pack to educate children about the dangers of paedophiles has been launched in Essex, with the support of three top TV stars. Broken Trust - Shared Feelings, produced by Essex Child Protection Committee, features Crimewatch and Holiday presenter Jill Dando, plus Birds of a Feather stars Pauline Quirke and Linda Robson.
Launched officially by Chief Constable John Burrow on March 2, the project had already won a national Enterprise Award from Community Care magazine. Mr. Burrow said, "The project handles the issue in a balanced way, showing children that the vast majority of adults can be trusted. "Without robbing youngsters of the innocence and freedom of their childhood, it warns them of the dangers that some adults may abuse them." The trio of TV stars present a video aimed at helping teachers to take pupils aged between 11 and 13 through the seven sessions in the pack, which focus on different types of relationships.
Both videos were made by Essex Police Television Unit, who worked with health, education and social workers in developing the pack. Chairman of Essex Child Protection Committee, Detective Chief Inspector Dick Madden said, "Ask most people how a paedophile operates and they think of 'dirty old men in raincoats' picking up children off the streets, but this is not the reality. "It is far more likely to be someone, usually a man, who befriends young people and their families. As with other dangers, we believe that education of young people in a sensitive and realistic way can serve to alert them to risks and help to keep them safe." When the pack was piloted at two schools in Southend, parents were fully supportive of the project and the need to educate their children about paedophile activity.
