The Essex Police Marine Section |

The section has grown over the years to match the number of craft on the water but there has always been a need to update the boats and equipment and to keep ahead of the different trends. |

In recent years there has been an explosion in the number of Jetskis around the waters of Essex so during the summers of 1996 and 97, a marine firm, EP Barrus sponsored the unit with jet powered craft, which will be patrolling again this summer. The JetSki helps to supplement the inflatable boats on the fast shallow water patrols. The section has a number of other craft including a 40ft launch, Vigilant III, plus a 33ft launch, Alert III. The unit has two rubber inflatable boats (RIBs) and a dory which is similar to a RIB but is solid and has two outboard motors. Working closely with other agencies is a high priority for the Marine Section. They support the work of the RNLI under the control of the coastguard in search and rescue operations. They also enforce the bylaws and the Merchant Shipping Act. They work closely with Customs, Immigration and the Port Authorities as well as other police forces in Kent, Suffolk and the Metropolitan Police. |

The Marine Section has played an important part in developing marine crime prevention and detection, augmenting the first successful 'Marine Watch' in the country. The officers in the section are also involved in promoting water safety to children As with all the specialist support units the officers who work in the section have to spend a certain amount of time on regular police work before they can apply to join.
