BRAINTREE & UTTLESFORD (A Division)


This is Essex Police's largest and most rural division. Although it covers an area of 125,300 hectares, it is the most sparsely populated division within Essex Police.

However, the Braintree District has been identified for further commercial and residential development in connection with the projected expansion of Stansted Airport. Further development is also planned along the A12 corridor.

BASILDON (B Division)


This urban police division includes Basildon, Pitsea, Laindon, Billericay, and Wickford. Unemployment remains the fourth highest for Essex, although it has fallen to around six per cent. Around a quarter of the population is aged under 18.

A 24-hour divisional response group has been introduced for dealing with emergencies throughout the area, leaving other officers in sections to deal with local policing needs.

CHELMSFORD & MALDON (C Division)


The county town of Chelmsford has been identified as a key area for long term employment growth. Road improvements are planned for the A12, A130 and A131. The division also includes rural and recreational areas around Burnham, the Blackwater estuary and the Dengie peninsula.

Closed circuit televison (CCTV) in Chelmsford has had a major impact in reducing town centre crime.

TENDRING (D Division)


This police division includes the popular seaside towns of Clacton, Walton and Frinton and the major international port of Harwich. It has a low crime rate, and has seen the number of house burglaries drop by a quarter in the last year. More than a quarter of the district's population are senior citizens.

COLCHESTER (E Division)


As England's oldest recorded town, Colchester is a popular tourist area. It is home to the second largest military Garrison in the country, in addition to a university and football league club.

The Colchester Division has seen a reduction in crime of more than ten per cent each year for the past four years. A comprehensive CCTV scheme was installed in the town centre in 1997, which has undoubtedly contributed to the latest figures.

THURROCK (F Division)


Thurrock's new unitary authority takes over the services provided by Essex County Council and Thurrock Borough Council on April 1, 1998. As part of the Thames Gateway, the area is expected to see considerable housing and economic growth. It includes the port of Tilbury, the Lakeside shopping and retail complex, two oil refineries and a gas plant at Corringham, a section of the M25 motorway and the Dartford River Crossing.

HARLOW, BRENTWOOD
& EPPING
(G Division)


This major division covers three local authority areas (although parts of Epping Forest District are policed by the Metropolitan Police), and includes stretches of the M11 and M25 motorways.

It provides a variety of policing challenges, from the densely populated urban areas of Harlow to the villages and hamlets in rural areas surrounding Brentwood and Epping.

Housing and commercial growth is principally in the Harlow district, with the Harlow 2000 partnership scheme providing social, cultural and retail proposals to regenerate the town centre.

SOUTHEND (H Division)


The new unitary authority of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council will be formed on April 1, 1998. Its population of 172,000 is the highest in the county, and the most densely populated at 41 people per hectare. Southend is one of the country's most popular day-trip destinations, with the annual airshow attracting up to one million spectators over two days.

The area's crime rate has fallen by nearly 20 per cent in the past year, with an encouraging nine per cent drop in violent crime.

RAYLEIGH
(CASTLE POINT & ROCHFORD - J Division)


The Rayleigh Division serves those people working, living and socialising in the districts of Rochford and Castle Point. The needs of local people are policed from four section stations, two in each district. Both districts are seeing an influx of investment from major companies towards the development of a shopping centre on Canvey Island, and the expansion of Southend Airport.

The division's crime rate has fallen by 17 per cent in the past year, assisted by good working partnerships between the chief executives of the two local authorities and the police divisional commander.

STANSTED AIRPORT (K Division)


This is Essex Police's smallest and most specialised division. However, the airport is expected to grow at a rate of one million passengers per year. Planning permission has been granted for up to 15 million passengers per year, at which stage it would be expected to employ 15,000 workers and generate 60,000 trips on Essex roads per day.

In 1997, a section of volunteer Special Constables was formed to support the policing of the airport.
