Three top television stars have helped launch a ground-breaking teaching pack to educate children about the dangers of paedophiles. Broken Trust - Shared Feelings has been produced by the Essex Child Protection Committee, with the support of Essex Police.

Budget cuts 'will not reduce service'

Chief Constable John Burrow has pledged budget cuts of £5m will not affect the level of service provided by Essex Police. The budget, agreed by the Police Authority, will mean a reduction in the number of police officers due to be recruited and a reduction in police overtime.

It has been confirmed that Essex is one of the safest counties in which to live.

The Audit Commission's Annual Performance Report on Police Services for 1996/7 states that only four areas had less reported crime.

Beating the computer bug

Essex Police is preparing for potential chaos if the so-called "millennium time-bomb", crashes computers across the world at the start of the year 2000. A top level group has been set up to look at the possible consequences.

Getting to grips with the new disorder bill

Essex Police faces some intense work over the next few years as it gets to grip with the new Crime and Disorder Bill. The legislation aims to address offending behaviour and reduce crime through a multi-agency approach. It will include a reform of the youth justice system.

Baby snatch officer asked to be Godmother

The constable tasked with looking after the family of snatched Basildon baby, Karli Hawthorne, has been asked to be the child's Godmother. It was Pc Sally Dunn's first time as a family liaison officer and she is "extremely touched" that parents Karl and Tanya made the request. She has accepted the honour and is waiting for the date of the Christening to be set.


 

Handgun owners surrender their weapons

Hundreds of small calibre handguns have been surrendered to Essex Police as part of a government ban on the weapons. It marks Phase Two of a project which last year took thousands of large calibre guns off the streets.

New police station for Laindon

MARCH 19th, 1998


After years of "temporary" accommodation, Laindon finally has its own state-of-the-art police station. Handed over ahead of schedule, it boasts many up-to-date facilities including a soundproof interview room, a fully equipped gym and a conference room.

The entire project has cost about £1.7m and was officially opened by Chief Constable John Burrow and Police Authority member, councillor Bill Archibald.


 

Search for budding brass players

MARCH 19th, 1998


The long and successfully established Essex Police Band has won a lottery grant of about £67,000 and plans to start a Youth Section. The search is now on for a group of brass players, aged up to 19, to form a band. There are no formal entry requirements and no need to have a family connection with the police, but a short audition will be necessary. The music will range from light classical to pop and rock. Anyone wanting more details should ring the Band Secretary on 01245 452327.


 

Commended for their extraordinary actions

A number of officers have been commended by Chief Constable John Burrow at a special ceremony at Essex Police Headquarters in Chelmsford.
